Most woman I know, diligently follow a three step process – cleansing, toning and moisturising – as part of their skincare regime. But for that extra anti-aging benefit, there is a new product that has gained immense popularity in the skin care market and that product is the anti-aging serum.
And this anti-aging product claims to be able to slow down the aging process whilst maintaining the youthfulness of your facial skin.
Here’s everything you need to know about anti-aging serums so that you too can stop the clock.
Serum or Cream – What’s the Difference?
A cream serves the purpose of a barrier and protects the skin. Whereas a serum nourishes it from deep within and is more fluid in nature with concentrated active ingredients in it. It penetrates deeply and thus brings a noticeable change from within.
How do I apply a serum?
Follow this simple rule – apply thinnest to thickest. Start with a serum; it is a great absorbent and leaves no greasy residue behind. Apply it approximately 1-2 minutes ahead of a cream in the evening, as it gives your skin ample time to regenerate itself overnight. Serums are concentrated and the texture is fluid, which means only a small amount is needed. It’s good to remember that overdoing it won’t give you better results. Warm both between your palms before applying and if you are using both, it is better to use from the same brand, as they are more likely to compliment each other.
How do I choose the right serum?
Your skin is likely to encounter different issues at different times of your life. Your choice of serum should be based on the kind of skin issue you wish to get rid of with it.
- At 30 – First signs of aging start making an appearance in the form of expression lines or skin dehydration. Pick an anti-aging serum with anti-wrinkle action and skin radiance restoring ability.
- At 40 – Skin starts losing its elasticity. You may also start to notice the appearance of dark spots.
- At 50 – You need a product that can fill deep wrinkles, remove pigmentation and should be capable of sculpting the face.
Beware False Claims
Most serums out there are actually moisturisers that make tall anti-aging claims. However, in reality their formulation is far from effective. So my advice to you is to choose wisely. Check the brand, its reputation in the market, and most importantly check the ingredients. It goes without saying that the serum whose ingredients are backed by science, should always be the one you go for. The best ingredients in this category are hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C, acetyl hexapeptide-8, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, palmitoyloligopeptide and other natural extracts. Some of them are present in Lifecell anti-aging cream ingredients. Your skin health should be a top priority, so look for essential vitamins like Vitamin A, C and E in any anti-aging serum.
Though the claims are tall and some may be able fulfil them, it’s important to remember that you will never get results overnight, so please be patient. You will need to use it for some weeks before you can actually expect the results to show. All in all it depends on the product and I emphasise again that you must pick wisely and after much research. My last advice is to not store your serums in hot and humid environment, as it may affect the effectiveness of the active ingredients. Instead, keep them in the refrigerator, along with your milk, salad and meat.
Now use this knowledge, get out there and pick the right product for your skin, and when you do remember to let us know what you choose.
