Things to Know When Practicing Yoga at Home

Practicing yoga is a great way to clear your mind and find balance within yourself, but not all of us have the time to attend regular yoga classes. And sometimes there’s not enough space in your home to practice on your own without moving all your furniture, which, let’s face it, nobody wants to do every morning. If you are serious about doing yoga, you might want to consider setting up your own yoga space at home. It’s a lot easier than you might think, and there are only a handful of things you need to keep in mind, so let’s see what they are.

A Peaceful Space

When you’re doing your daily meditation, the last thing you need is loud music, chatter or other noises interrupting your Zen. If you have a whole room designated for your yoga sessions, then you might want to consider sound isolation. However, don’t just think about the sounds – try to isolate your space from all the unnecessary scents, lights and rapid temperature changes that might occur. You might want to consider getting thick curtains and isolation around the door so that there is no draft.

A Spiritual Connection

Depending on which areas of yoga you are most interested in, there are different things you might want to set up in your yoga space. Many people like having an altar as a centrepiece next to which they can channel their energy and focus on their spirituality. An altar can be anything from a bookcase to a simple room corner filled with pictures, books, flower incense and anything else that fulfils you. Meditation and yoga props are also vital: pillows, foam blocks, blankets and anything else that helps you relax should be within your reach. Make sure you stimulate all of your senses by lighting incense, playing relaxing music or sounds of nature and letting in natural light. All of these will help you feel more comfortable and inspire you to embrace the lifestyle.

Everything mentioned above might sound like common sense, but let’s talk about some things that people tend to overlook: The room where you meditate should always be clean. And while having a thick, soft rug might sound great in your mind, in reality, having something like gym flooring will be a lot easier to maintain. Another big difference when practicing at home is – there is no coach to tell you what to do. You are on your own, and while that has its benefits, you might find yourself lacking guidance and losing motivation. To make sure that doesn’t happen, you should stock up on books, videos and advice on how to do yoga on your own. Moreover, if you feel insecure about doing a certain position on your own, don’t do it, don’t risk hurting yourself. Another great way to beat the monotony is to have a yoga buddy. No matter whether it is a family member or a friend, having someone who will remind you that you should practice every day, even for a short while, will go a long way in forming your yoga-related habits.

Most importantly, remember that yoga is all about getting to know ourselves, so if you feel like you should be adjusting some of the ideas presented here to your own needs – by all means, go ahead. Having a spiritual connection with your body and your surroundings will help ground you while at the same time allowing you to soar, and if you’ve never tried yoga before, it is an experience that will change your life for the better.
