3 Differences Between Sober Houses And Rehab Centers

Recognizing and eliminating drug abuse requires sheer determination. One of the basic steps towards leaving behind the life of drug abuse is enrolling in a rehabilitation center. While rehab centers play an important role in recovering from addiction, sober houses provide an environment for recovering addicts to mentally prepare them for the transition from a rehab center back to society.

This is a very crucial step because transitioning back to a normal life can be challenging and recovering addicts may face the danger of relapse. Recognizing the difference between a sober house and a rehab center is very important. It is only when you know the difference that you’ll be able to choose the right option.

Here are a few things that set recovery centers apart from sober houses.

1. Environment

Rehab centers provide inpatient and outpatient treatments and need people to spend a period of 30-90 days there. This time period can be prolonged if necessary. They provide the addicts with the opportunity to reconnect, improve and achieve their goals. But they are highly disciplined, and each step of the addict is carefully observed. The addicts are mostly not allowed to contact anyone outside of the facility to keep them from contacting their drug dealers.

On the other hand, sober homes, like this one in CT may have a more laid-back environment and provide an increased level of freedom while still following curfews and rules. Sober houses also provide more mobility to the residents and they are allowed to visit friends and family. They provide a smooth transition by incorporating healthy activities like exercise and other hobbies. The transition phase is filled with emotional challenges, and sober homes help a great deal to face them.

2. Treatment Approach

Rehab centers provide detox programs to get rid of their addiction. These treatment programs can be medicated, psychiatric or non-medicated. In a medicated approach, patients are prescribed drugs to help them with withdrawal, and other complications that come with it. In non-medicated treatment, addicts may be provided with behavioral counseling, psychological treatment for mental health issues and spiritual circles.

But the purpose of going to a sober home is not treatment. They do not provide detox programs to addicts, they provide support groups, group discussions and activities that are supposed to help the residents transition back into a healthy living style and adjust into a normal life. They help their residents in achieving basic goals of daily life and teach them how to keep a job and rebuild their relationship with their family and friends.

3. Accommodation Cost

Since rehab centers and sober houses provide different facilities, their cost is different too. Rehab centers can be very expensive considering all the facilities that are provided there.

Medications, 24/7 monitoring, experts of different treatment techniques cost a lot of money. Since patients live their 24/7, the basic accommodation facilities like bills etc are also covered in  the recovery center’s enrollment fee.

In the case of sober houses, a person is not expected to jump right back to their normal routine and life after being in recovery. Sober houses are relatively cheaper because of  a number of factors. One of which being that the patients don’t live there round the clock. You can stay for as long as you feel is necessary. Since a person has already received recovery, constant medications and expert staff is not required which also cuts the cost.

There are a number of other differences between sober houses and recovery centers and one should do thorough research before joining either. While doing research on your own is good, it is also important that you consult a professional, like your doctor before you make that decision.
