5 Home Remedies For Gum Pain Relief

There is more to oral health than a bright smile or straight teeth, as these wouldn’t keep you away from oral diseases such as gum disease. Unfortunately, statistics show that more than 3 million people suffer from persistent oral pain in the UK. The causes or pain severity may vary based on several issues and lifestyle choices. But how can you treat and relieve yourself from the pain? Here are five home remedies you can use to provide instant gum pain relief.

Essential Oils

There is a good reason why many medical products contain essential oils. They contain properties that help improve circulation and decrease pain and inflammation. You can make your own pain-relieving medication to decrease gum pain by simply combining water and essential oils. Put your mixture in a clean spray bottle and spray the inflamed area for instant relief.

Rinsing With Salt Water

Pour a cup of warm water into a glass, add one tablespoon of salt and stir well to mix. Gaggle the saltwater solution in your mouth and spit it out when done— do this till the swelling reduces. Salt is known to contain various properties that help remove the bacteria living in your gums and causing the swelling. Rinsing with saltwater increases the PH-balance in your mouth by creating an oral alkaline environment that makes it harder for bacteria to thrive. Harmful bacteria prefer acidic environments, so the mouth becomes less inflamed when your mouth is neutralised.

Hot Or Cold Compresses

For hot compress, soak a clean cloth into water heated to a tolerable temperature and squeeze out the excess water. Gently press the damp, warm cloth in the area closest to where you feel the pain in your gums. For cold compress, apply a clean cloth wrapped in an ice pack to the areas closest to your gum pain area.

While these methods have shown effectiveness for eliminating or subsiding your gum pain, it is advisable not to apply the hot or cold compress directly to your gums.

Teabags

Teabags with anti-inflammatory properties like ginger and chamomile or those rich in astringent tannins like green tea, hibiscus tea, or perhaps black tea effectively relieve pain in your gum. The anti-inflammatory properties will soothe the pain as the tannins absorb everything irritating the gums.

Over-The-Counter (OTC) Medication

You may see the best results when combining your home remedies with over-the-counter medications. For instance, some mouth ulcer ointment offers fast-healing, inflammation and pain relief from sore gums, braces, and dentures discomforts. More so, experts have suggested that OTC nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and naproxen can work well against dental pain since they stop enzymes that cause your gums to redden or get swollen.

Although these treatments are guaranteed to give you the relief you need, this list is not an exhaustive one. You can search for more ways to treat your gum pain at home. However, if the pain becomes severe or your gums begin to bleed, it may be time to visit a dentist.
