5 Tips To Ensure Food Safety

Upholding the highest standards of food hygiene is essential, as negligence in this area can be a source of over 200 varied health afflictions, ranging from gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea to severe conditions like viral infections and even oncological risks. Our initiative focuses on elevating the community’s recognition of food hygiene practices’ vital role.

By fostering an awareness environment, we are better positioned to thwart, pinpoint, and counteract the spread and impact of pathogens transmitted via food. To empower you in ensuring the edibility and safety of your meals, we are pleased to share with you a compilation of five straightforward strategies dedicated to food safety:

Cleanliness

Frequently ensure that surfaces for food preparation and appliances used in cooking are kept clean. Opt for cleaning fruits and vegetables using specialized food sanitizers or straightforward, clean water. It’s essential to scrub hands with warm, soapy water for less than 20 seconds, particularly when contacting food items.

Employ hot water for sterilizing chopping boards, plates, cutlery, and kitchen counters following the handling of each type of food. It’s advisable to gently rinse produce while refraining from rinsing meats, poultry, fish, or eggs to avert the spread of bacteria through water droplets from the sink. Always make sure to sanitize the tops of canned goods before their opening.

Proper Management, Storage, and Transportation

Incorporate food safety measures during the handling, storage, and transportation phases. This is true for both receiving shipments and dispatching products to consumers. You also have to consider the importance of weighing food products correctly.

Some foods are of much higher risk than others, such as high-risk foods like cooked rice or raw fish-based dishes. During these critical stages, several factors must be meticulously managed to avoid the contamination of food items. These factors include:

  • Maintaining appropriate temperature, humidity, and cleanliness at operation sites, in vehicles, and within containers;
  • Implementing safety and risk prevention strategies where food products are packaged;
  • Securing digital software employed for organizing, tracking, and managing logistical activities.

The FDA has issued guidance on the Sanitary Transportation of Food that serves all food industry segments. It provides a comprehensive overview of recommended practices for establishing controls to eliminate risks of food safety issues during transit.

Keep Raw and Cooked Food Apart

For food safety, store raw meat separately from ‘ready-to-eat’ items like fruits, vegetables, and precooked meats. Ensure that consumables meant to be eaten without further cooking are not stored with raw products, since this prevents any potential bacterial contamination that cooking would normally eliminate.

When raw foods are cooked, harmful bacteria are destroyed. Nevertheless, should these raw products touch ready-to-eat foods, the bacteria will remain, posing a health risk.

Defrosting, Freezing, and Refreezing

Ensuring the safety of frozen meats and fish is straightforward, but it’s essential to freeze these items prior to their expiration date for optimal food safety. Properly encasing raw meats and fish in freezer-safe bags or wrap helps shield against freezer burn, preserving their quality and edibility.

For cooking, make sure to completely thaw meat and fish. This can be efficiently done by setting the quantity of liquid released. Placing them in a dish prevents potential bacteria within the liquid from coming into contact with, and thereby contaminating, other fridge contents.

It’s advised against re-freezing raw meats or fish that have been defrosted. Once thawed, these items should be cooked, reheated once, and then consumed promptly. Cooked meats, however, can be frozen again provided they were cooled properly before being put back into the freezer.

Manage Your Waste

Regularly inspect your inventory to ensure no outdated food remains in your kitchen, as it could be hazardous. Additionally, always keep waste separate from food by using a bin with a cover, to deter flies and mitigate other food-related risks.

Endnote

In essence, ensuring food safety is pivotal not just for improving health and securing food supplies, but it also plays a significant role in supporting livelihoods, boosting economic growth, facilitating trade, and enhancing the global standing of each nation.
