Art of Healthy Living Advent Calendar – Day 23

Have you thought about your New Year’s resolution yet? Yes, I know it’s a little early, I mean come on, we haven’t even got through Christmas yet, but I bet you’ve had a bit of a think about it.

I know I certainly have…

As I sit slowly scoffing my way through a tub of Quality Street (don’t you dare cast judgement on me – we all know those tubs have got smaller!) I can’t help but think about how come January I’ll be back on it and will be making it my mission to get fit, lose weight and exercise like a crazy woman possessed.

And then as I glam myself up for the festive parties, I glance down at my scruffy, bitten to the quick, sorry excuse of the word ‘nails’ and vow that next year will be the year that I do something about this disgusting habit. Note to reader – this has been my resolution every year for as long as I can remember, so clearly it is not one I can keep!

So, what’s my point? Is Door 23 of our advent calendar asking you to sit down and write a list of all of the things you’re not going to stick to next year…?

Well, yes that’s exactly what we want you to do!

Write down all of those unrealistic resolutions we put so much pressure on ourselves to try and achieve, but then once you’ve finished your list I want you to stand up, take a deep breath and…

RIP IT UP!

That’s right, take great pleasure in ripping every last, little one of those resolutions into tiny smithereens and hell if you feel like letting out a joyous whoop as you do so, no one will think any less of you 🙂

It feels good doesn’t it?

No pressure.

No guilt.

Just a sense of lightness and adrenaline fuelled relief that will motivate you far more than any resolution will.

We’re not saying you shouldn’t have goals – everyone needs aspirations, hopes, dreams, whatever you want to call them, but what we do want you to is to be realistic. Set yourself small, achievable and measurable goals instead.

So for example:

  • Want to up your fitness game? – Write down the reasons why, how you can go about achieving this and how you can fit this into your life. Don’t go in all guns blazing with the attitude that you need to go from nothing to suddenly exercising 7 days a week – so unrealistic! Play the long game and take it a step at a time.
  • Maybe your clothes are feeling a bit tight? – Do you know what? Everyone’s clothes feel a bit tight after Christmas; it’s the Christmas law! Don’t sweat it. Just think about making healthy choices, eating foods that nourish and fuel your body to look and perform at its best. Healthy eating is not just for January – it’s for life!

Above all else we want you to be happy, positive and to start the year without all of that emotional baggage.

Remember to check back tomorrow to see what’s behind door 24 of the Art of Healthy Living Advent Calendar.
