If you’re a fan of working out from home, you’ll know the importance of having the right workout kit. And yes, I know you can still work out using bottles of water or cans of beans as weights, but I personally don’t think it quite gets you in the same mindset when you don’t have the proper gear. As someone who has always loved working out from home, I have recently upped my game a little and started investing in a few bits and pieces to help mix my workouts up and to give them some variation, as well as to keep me motivated!
For me, any good home workout kit should include the following:
- A good quality mat
- Resistance bands
- Foam rollers
- Dumbbells of various weights
- And a timer.
Now I’ll be honest, up until now I’ve been using my phone to time my workouts, or if that gets too annoying, which usually it does I scrap timing altogether and then I generally find myself winging my way through it before slacking off because I know I can get away with it. Plus, if I’m using my phone to play music and there’s all kinds of other notifications pinging left right and centre it can just get too much. So, when I was given the chance to review the TrainFit WOD Timer I was well up for it.
Yeah OK, But Why Do I Need To Time My Workouts?
So, you might well be thinking, why do I need to time my workouts, can’t I just carry on the way I am? And to be fair, you’ve got a bit of a point, but take it from someone who also thought they didn’t need a timer that it doesn’t half make life so much easier when you have got one. And I’ll explain why…
When it comes to working out on your own, sometimes you need to push yourself that little bit harder and further than you might normally. If you had a PT they’d be doing that part, the motivating and yelling and all that business. But when it’s you on your own it’s very easy to think, oh I’ll just skip that last round or I’ll stop now because my arms are aching a bit and any structure you had to your workout simply goes out the window. A timer allows you to carry on just that bit longer, because you’ve got something to aim towards and you can push yourself that bit harder. I am totally at that stage in my workout now, where I potter along doing what I’m doing, quite content with a rough plan in mind of what I should be doing. But in order to progress I need to push myself. I need to up my game. And so I have, by buying some resistance bands, some ankle weights, a new mat, and now I’ve got this timer too, it’s giving me an opportunity to be mine own PT if you like.
Tell Me More About The TrainFit WOD Timer
OK so let’s take a look at this timer in a bit more detail. Firstly, in case you didn’t already know, WOD stands for Workout Of the Day. It’s a CrossFit thing, but basically the principle can be applied to any workout really, in that it is a workout consisting of various moves that are completed over a set period of time. These moves then vary between workout sessions, to ensure you get an optimized workout and to make sure your body works harder by not getting too used to the same old moves.
The TrainFit WOD Timer is great as it takes 8 classic workout formats and stores them as pre-set modes. All you need to do is press the mode button until you reach your desired workout format and that’s it, you’re ready to go.
The 8 options include:
- AMRAP (As Many Reps As Possible) – Bust out as many reps of a particular exercise as possible within a given time.
- EMOM1 (Every Minute On the Minute) – The timer beeps on every minute as a cue for you to change the exercise you are doing. This setting consists of 5 rounds of a 5 minute workout with a 1 minute rest in between.
- EMOM 2 – This is the same as EMOM1 but with 3 rounds instead of 5.
- HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) – Short bursts of high intensity moves, 30 seconds of workout followed by 30 seconds of rest and you get to choose how many rounds you want. The timer goes up to 99 rounds, but let’s face it that’s a tad ambitious!
- MIIT (Moderate Intensity Interval Training) – Similar to HIIT but scaled down a notch to 1 minute of moderate intensity exercise followed by 1 minute of rest, again with the option of up to 99 rounds.
- Tabata – This is basically a quicker form of HIIT. A Tabata workout runs for 4 minutes, which breaks down as 8 rounds of 20 seconds of workout followed by 10 seconds of rest.
- FGB1 (Fight Gone Bad) – This is the ultimate CrossFit benchmark, the one to really show your progression in terms of fitness and strength. 17 rounds of 1 minute workout with no rest in between, this is not for the fainthearted!
- FGB2 – Same same, but different. 17 slightly less brutal rounds of 1 and a half minutes workout with a 1 minute rest in between.
I love that the TrainFit WOD Timer is so easy to use. I mean I’m OK with using a bit of tech every now and again, but I don’t want to be having to spend an age reading the instructions to figure out what to do with it. But this is super intuitive. It’s lightweight, portable and comes with its own carry case so should you wish to venture out to a park, a friend’s house or just some place different because you are soooooooo fed up of your own home (ummmm like aren’t we all right now!) you know it’s going to travel well.
It has an LED clock display, which is nice and big and easy to read, so when you’re working out you can just give a quick glance and know exactly where you’re at rather than having to faff about taking your phone off screen lock and then squinting at the small screen. Throw in the fact it’s magnetic (presumably so that you can attach it to gym equipment to make it more eye level), it is wireless (it comes with a rechargeable USB-C lead), can be Bluetooth controlled via an App, and also has a countdown buzzer, and this timer has got your workout well and truly sorted.
Priced at £99.99, although if you’re quick you can get £20 off at the moment taking it down to £79.99, the TrainFit WOD Timer isn’t the cheapest bit of workout kit you’ll ever buy, but I’ve no doubt it’ll be the one you use the most.
