How A Positive Outlook Can Get You Through Tough Times In Life

Here’s what we’re all dealing with right now: global pandemic, political chaos, economic recession, wars and famine all over the world, and general anxiety that’s slowly seeping into every single crack of our society. And the cherry on top of this miserable cake? Your own set of personal issues. From student loans and mortgage bills, to family drama, rocky relationships, and job worries. The troubles never seem to end.

Despite all of this, you’ve heard at least a dozen lifestyle gurus and influencers telling you that you need to stay positive. But how on earth do you do that, when everything around you is crumbling? What’s the point?

While it’s tough to see the good side of life when faced with strife, it’s far from impossible. You can absolutely become the kind of person who manages to stay strong and happy despite the things happening around them. It just takes some time and a few valuable lessons.

Be Mindful Of Toxic Positivity

You do not need to be happy and positive all the time. In fact, forcing yourself to always grit your teeth and smile through misfortune is likely to backfire and make you more miserable than ever before. If you always suppress negative emotions and use phrases like “it could be worse”, then all that negativity will stay bottled up inside you. Things that are bottled up this way tend to explode at the most inopportune of times, so don’t feel obliged to keep grinning when the times are truly bad.

Process Your Emotions

To tie into the previous point – negative emotions aren’t something to be ashamed of. Hiding how you really feel about something or attempting to dismiss a negative thought won’t really make the feeling go away. If you want to truly embrace positivity, you have to process your emotions slowly. All of your emotions. Especially the negative ones.

Allow yourself to go through the process of feeling them, and in the end, understanding them. Don’t dismiss yourself in any capacity. What you feel is valid, and just because you experience negative emotions doesn’t mean you can’t be a happy, positive person.

Prepare Yourself For Tough Situations

We live in the times when bad things are more likely to happen than usual. While this doesn’t mean you need to obsessively expect for everything that happens to be bad, you can still be prepared in case trouble does come your way.

Seeing as how COVID-19 is on everyone’s lips these days, one of the ways you could ease your mind and feel more prepared is taking a medical course. Something like ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) courses are a good choice. You can find ACLS and PALS courses online, and they’ll help you learn how to react in an emergency. While these techniques don’t replace the kind of medical care you can get in a hospital, they can help you keep someone alive and safe until medical personnel arrives.

Besides this, simply working on skills that interest you is a good idea because it will give you confidence. The more you know and understand, the more useful and fulfilled you’ll feel. Attaining new knowledge is a great way to feel more positive about yourself.

Reach Out For Help

Simply having someone listen without judgment can lift a huge weight off anyone’s shoulders. When you feel overwhelmed and miserable, remember that you don’t have to go through it alone. Reaching out to your family, friends, or your partner can help you feel more grounded. Any problem out there can be easier to deal with when you have someone by your side, ready to jump in and help you out.

If you don’t want to reach out to your loved ones for any reason, you could schedule a meeting with a psychotherapist. A professional will know just how to guide you through a difficult time better than anyone.

Get Away From Negative People

You can’t stay positive in the company of people who are always ready to criticize, pass judgment, make snide comments, and complain about everything. These types of people tend to kill any joy and motivation you may have inside of you and fill you with negative emotions that make you see the world as something bleaker than it really is. You don’t need them in your life, so feel free to politely reject their company.

Take Time For Yourself

It’s hard to feel happy when your needs aren’t met, so try to put self-care before all else. By self-care we don’t mean things like impulsive shopping – we mean exercise, healthy food, getting plenty of sleep, communicating with your loved ones, taking time to do your hobbies. If you invest in yourself and really work on feeling better, it will pay off.

Changing your entire mindset to embrace positivity won’t happen overnight, and is usually a result of long, consistent work. It all boils down to being more patient with yourself, caring for your health, processing your emotions, working on learning new skills, and surrounding yourself with good people. In the end, you just have to remember to put one foot in front of the other and take it slow.
