How to Keep Cooking Healthy This Summer

Many people have used the lockdown period to do something positive and productive with many turning to cooking as a new hobby. This makes sense because people have had a lot more time to spend at home and cooking is an activity which everyone can benefit from as it will help you to enjoy your food more, eat a healthier diet and even save money when you know how to cook healthy meals from scratch.

A Rise In Batch Cooking

A survey conducted by Hammonds, revealed that as many as 7 in 10 people have started to cook meals from scratch during the lockdown with curry, spaghetti bolognese and chilli being the three most popular meals to batch cook. Batch cooking meals like this is a smart idea because it can be a healthy option and more affordable than takeaway/instant meals, plus it means that you do not have to cook every night, which can save a lot of time and energy. Food shortage was a concern at the start of lockdown so this appears to be a way that people have coped and is a positive because it also cuts down on food waste.

So, with lockdown now being eased and some normality being resumed, how can people continue to cook healthily and continue to use their kitchens this summer? There are a few handy tips which will help you to maintain a good diet, continue to cook and enjoy your food this summer.

Plan Ahead

One of the best ways to maintain a good diet over the summer (and at any time in the year) is simply to plan what you are going to eat each week ahead of time. This will help you to stock up on anything that you need and prepare yourself for what you need to cook – cooking in batches is still a good option if you have the time so that you do not have to spend a lot of time in the kitchen every night.

Know How To BBQ In A Healthy Manner

Of course, BBQs are likely to be even more common than usual this summer as people socialise at home and many will be hesitant to go to restaurants once they reopen. BBQs can be great fun and a chance to enjoy delicious food, but you must also be careful because they can be unhealthy. This is why you need to choose leaner cuts of meat to reduce your saturated fat intake, make your own marinades that will be lower in salt and keeping up the balance by grilling vegetables and making healthy salads to have on the side.

It is a positive that many people have taken to learning how to cook healthy meals in batches, reduce food waste and reconsider their grocery choices in the months gone by and hopefully this will continue into summer and beyond.
