Resolutions for 2016 #22

In 2016 we will…

Manage stress better.

Stress is something that affects us all at some point in our lives. It’s something that’s very difficult to avoid and therefore the best thing we can do is to learn some stress management techniques in order to cope better in times of stress.

There are various techniques for managing stress and certain methods will work for some people whereas some people may find other methods more effective. It’s a simple case of finding the one that works best for you and once you know that, you will be able to handle anything.

Some techniques for managing stress include:

  • Mindfulness
  • Exercise
  • Walking in the fresh air
  • Breathing exercises
  • A hobby, such as gardening, colouring or knitting
  • Taking a hot, bubble bath.
  • Talking to people

There are also three things you should definitely avoid when feeling stressed; things that may seem like solutions to your problems, but are actually making things a lot worse in the long run. Alcohol, caffeine and smoking are all easy crutches to fall back on, but will only make you feel better for a short time. As the effects of these starts to run out, you will be left feeling even more stressed and it could potentially lead to other, much worse mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. A glass of wine after a stressful day at work may seem like just the tonic, but what if every day is stressful? Having a glass of wine to cope each and every time suddenly develops into a much, much bigger problem.

Do yourself a favour in 2016 and take the time to explore and discover your own coping mechanisms to deal with stress.
