UK beds and mattress store, Happy Beds, has recently looked at over 30,000 tweets to see if there are any common factors causing sleepless nights across the UK over the past 12 months.
Analysis of insomnia-related social posts found that the three common reasons were Brexit, followed by Champions League winners Liverpool FC and Game of Thrones.
The hashtag #StopBrexit was found to be the most common hashtag amongst the tweets that were analysed. There were also two more hashtags in the top five that were Brexit related, including ‘United Kingdom’ and ‘European Union’.
The campaign found that the top hashtags used were:
- #stopbrexit
- #sleep
- #ynwa
- #gameofthronesfinale
- #lfc
- #got8
- #insomnia
- #brexit
- #nowplaying
- #snowdonia
The 10 most frequently mentioned entities were:
- Brexit
- Liverpool FC
- United Kingdom
- Sleep
- European Union
- Netflix
- You’ll Never Walk Alone
- Jon Snow
- Tormund Giantsbane
- Bran Stark
This year’s Game of Thrones finale clearly kept Brits up a lot, with #GoT8 and #GameofThronesFinale also appearing in the top results. This wasn’t the only TV show mentioned, however, with Love Island and Line of Duty also making an appearance.
Joy Richards, sleep expert at Happy Beds commented on the campaign by saying:
“If you can’t sleep, then we recommend staying away from social media due to the ‘blue light’ emitted from phones, which actually suppresses melatonin, the chemical which helps you sleep.”
