Time-Saving Cooking Tips For Busy Moms

The term busy moms already implies that these women have to balance multiple responsibilities at the same time and with cooking in the equation, things can get quite challenging. It’s very important to eat healthy meals so even on the busiest days, cooking is a must.

This may sound like an impossible mission, but there are hefty cooking tips every busy mom can use to prepare great meals faster and easier even on the most hectic days. It’s about good planning and organisation, and everything else is in the practical details. Here are some cooking tips to help you save time and eat well as a family.

Plan Ahead

First and foremost, plan ahead! Plan not just the meals but methods as well. Have a game plan that will be fail-proof and ensure you have everything you need. You can make weekly or monthly meal plans using various cookbooks, or you can simply consult your family members and make a list of their favourite meals which you then include in your rotation cooking schedule.

Prep In Advance

The second best advice for busy moms to make the cooking process more efficient is to prep in advance. Before you do your weekly shopping, clean out your fridge and pantry, see what you need for the next week, make a list of groceries you need and then go shopping. This will ensure you get everything you need without wasting food.

When you get home and start unpacking, you can cut vegetables for lunches and dinners, prepare a few sauces that you can store in jars in the fridge and cook a big pot of quinoa or rice to set aside for a casserole dinner later in the week.

Get High-Quality Cookware

Another great thing about planning meals is that you can start on your dinner before you leave the house on those days when your schedule is extra hectic. Buy the best slow cooker or crockpot you can, put all the ingredients you want and when you get home from work, the dinner will be ready in a few minutes.

On the days when you have some extra time on your hands, use your carbon steel wok to whip up some spicy veggies in addition to the meat your slow cooker has already prepared for you. With the right cookware, preparing food will always run easily and smoothly, and you won’t have to stand for hours prepping dinner for a hungry family.

Cook In Batches

Batch cooking is a great way that will save you time because you’re prepping several meals in advance. As you prep your groceries, set some aside and prep a few meals that you can store in your freezer. These will come in handy on busy days when you’re low on both time and energy. Moreover, buying in bulk will also save you money in the long run.

Freeze Meals

As mentioned above, cooking in advance and freezing your meals is a great way to save time and money, but it’s also healthier. Store-bought frozen meals contain a high level of unhealthy ingredients such as sodium and various additives. If you can squeeze a couple of hours during the week, use it to prep these meals and put them in the freezer – it’s an excellent strategy when you insist your family eat healthily.

Repurpose What You Have

On those days when there are some leftovers, get creative with those ingredients and repurpose them to make new meals. There are lots of ways to re-use leftovers. For instance, leftover marinara from a spaghetti dinner can be frozen to make a lasagne dish, a dipping sauce for mozzarella sticks, or as a spread for various appetizers.

In general, you can freeze leftover stock of any kind, even red wine in an ice cube tray. Once frozen, take the cubes out and pack them in labelled resealable freezer bags. The wine cubes are convenient for sauces and chillies, and stock cubes can be used for those recipes that require small amounts of stock for flavouring such as risotto.

Stick To A Routine

Finally, try to relax because you don’t have to invent a new culinary wonder every night. Make it even easier on yourself and come up with a routine – assign meals to different days of the week. Call them new family traditions and have a pizza Friday, a pancake Wednesday and a taco Tuesday! Get your kids involved as well and make your own batter or crust from scratch!

No busy mom has it easy with so many responsibilities to juggle every day, but with these cool cooking tips, at least it’ll be easier to prepare healthy meals with no fuss!
