The 6 Main Causes Of Blurry Vision

There are many problems that can potentially occur when it comes to your eyes, and the importance of prescription glasses in cases like these should never be underestimated or overlooked. The eyes are arguably the most sensitive areas of the body and are susceptible to many problems over a lifetime, particularly if they are not taken care of properly. People that require prescription glasses can avoid many of the most common vision problems and there are many benefits associated with them.

The 6 main problems of blurry vision include:

1. High Blood Sugar

High blood sugar levels can cause eye lenses to swell, resulting in blurred vision. The swelling can alter the shape of the eyes, and also how the eyes focus. Before a person experiences any complications related to diabetes, high blood sugar can lead to vision becoming blurry.

Luckily this issue typically lasts only for a few hours to a couple of days. The important thing for people to remember is that if any symptoms arise, check immediately if you suspect high blood sugar as you may be at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Overweight and obese people that have a family history should also get checked immediately. Other symptoms to look out for are excessive thirst and frequent urination.

2. Eye Strain

We are all staring at smartphones and computer screens for many hours a day and for those that spend too much time staring at screens, eye strain can occur over an extended length of time. In order to circumvent eye strain, try to limit screen time and take breaks throughout the day as needed. Digital eye strain is the term used to refer to staring at digital screens for too long, with other causes including driving and reading during the night or in inclement weather.

3. Stroke

Impaired or blurry vision in one eye or even both eyes occurs when a stroke occurs that affects the part of the brain which controls vision. Strokes that involve the eyes cause lost vision in one eye, as it is characterized as a weakness on one side of the body. There are other symptoms involved with a stroke, and they include weakness on one side of the body or not being able to speak.

4. Migraine

Migraines can be debilitating for many people and having prescription glasses is one way to prevent these for good. In many instances, migraine attacks occur after an aura, which can lead to blurred vision. You may also see flashing lights, wavy lights and other disturbances of your senses. There are some people that experience an aura without having a headache. Prescription progressive glasses have been proven to alleviate the symptoms and are highly recommended as a form of treatment.

5. Scratches And Scarring

If anything comes into contact with the naked eye, there is the possibility that it can be scratched, which could include dust particles from the wind or situations where debris accidentally flies into the eye. Corneal abrasions are the most common eye injuries, with symptoms include significant eye discomfort, redness, tearing, sensitivity to light, and blurry vision. Note that all scars affect vision, with scars on the outer edges of the cornea not impairing vision.

6. Optic Nerve Inflammation

Also known as optic neuritis, optic nerve inflammation occurs when there is swelling that causes damage to the optic nerve, the bundle of nerve fibers that transmit visual data from the eye to the brain. Symptoms common to optic nerve inflammation include pain with eye movement and temporary vision impairment in one eye. Other problems associated with optic nerve inflammation that some people may experience include vision loss, vision distortion, and even blindness. For those that have been diagnosed with glaucoma, eye drops, oral medications, laser therapy, or drainage tubes are all viable options that can be used as treatment.

Protect Your Eye Health

Fortunately for most people, the majority of the reasons for impaired or blurry vision won’t permanently threaten eyesight. There may be some instances when it is necessary to visit an emergency room or see a doctor, and the most important thing is to do so as soon as possible. When you notice any changes to your eyes suddenly, have pain in your eye, or have compromised vision in a specific area, take care of it immediately to guard your health.
