As we age, our bodies aren’t the only thing that starts to decline. It’s just as important for senior citizens to tend to their mental health as it is for them to take proper care of their physical health. Thankfully, there are plenty of supplements, vitamins, and foods that can help with this.

Omega-3

No matter your age or health goals, it seems as if omega-3 fatty acids are a must to reach your goals. The same is true when it comes to improving mental cognition in senior citizens. By ensuring your brain has plenty of this essential fatty acid, you’re giving your brain what it needs to be fully operational. Elderly individuals should do what they can to eat plenty of fish like salmon, halibut, sardines, or tuna at least twice a week.

Vitamin B1

A daily dose of 50mg of vitamin B1 for elderly individuals can help treat dementia. What happens is the vitamin helps protect and strengthen cholinergic neurons, which are instrumental in nerve transmissions. Those with dementia can see an improvement in their condition by taking the vitamin, and those with a history of dementia in their family can take steps to prevent it by taking vitamin B1, along with supplements for men over 50 and women over 50.

Vitamin E

Antioxidants offer a number of health benefits for the young and old. When it comes to senior citizens, getting antioxidant supplements like vitamin E can boost their overall brain function. Like with vitamin B1, vitamin E can also keep the clutches of dementia at bay.

Flavonoids

Berries are a great source of flavonoids, which go a long way in helping to improve overall brain functionality and memory. Some of the best food sources of flavonoids are berries such as blackberries, blueberries, and cherries. What’s so great about this brain-boosting food is the fact that it’s so easy to add to your daily diet. You can enjoy berries in the morning with your cereal, as a midday snack, or as a dessert. If you like, you can even pair them with some of the best supplements for women over 50 and men over 50.

Folic Acid

By getting at least 400 mcg of folic acid a day, you help your body lower a harmful amino acid that can cause dementia. Folic acid is found in foods such as pasta, spinach, bread, cereal, and beans.

Protect your brain with as much effort as you take to protect your body as you age into your golden years. The right foods and supplements can keep your brain agile and sharp.
