The teen years can be some of the hardest times in a child’s life. A changing body and growing responsibilities from school, peers, friends, and relationships can put a lot of pressure on teens. I certainly did not enjoy my teenage years! I was covered in terrible acne, had terrible mood swings and was so confused about the world. Not to mention trying to find your place in society and where you fit in. But for all that is hard about it, it’s still a great time of life and one where you can truly explore the world around you. There are many changes in a teenager’s life, and some of these changes can be supported with the use of essential oils.
In this blog we will look at some of the most common essential oils you can use to support your teen. Below I have suggested some of the best essential oils your teen can use. You can add oils to a diffuser bracelet, roller bottle blend or a few drops in the palm of the hands and inhale deeply.
Homework, Study and Focus
With so much else happening in their lives, homework can easily make it to the bottom of your teen’s priority list. Aromatherapy has been used by scholars since the time of the Ancient Greeks, and they can help your teen with things like memory, focus, and concentration.
Rosemary Essential Oil – Studies show the invigorating aroma of Rosemary can have a positive effect on cognition and can improve the speed of learning while improving long-term memory.
Wild Orange and Peppermint Essential Oil – These two mixed together are a powerhouse! Use together for focus and clarity when studying.
During our teen years, we’re so aware of the way we look and how other people see us. Hormones can cause issues such as breakouts or oily skin and hair.
It is important to take a holistic approach when addressing the issue of acne in teens. Healthy, whole food nutrition, adequate water consumption, exercise, stress reduction, and sleep are key components to supporting overall health, wellbeing, and hormonal balance.
If your teenager is suffering from problem skin, encourage them to wash their hands throughout the day, wash their face before bed, use the right skin products, not to share makeup and incorporate the right essential oils into their routine.
Essential oils can support your teens skin in so many different ways. The essential oils listed below can be used by either adding a drop to their face moisturiser or cleanser or by using in a compress.
To compress, cleanse your skin and rinse then fill up a basin of hot water. Add a few drops of any of the essential oils below, swirl around and then dip a face washer in. Wring out and compress your skin. Repeat 6-8 times.
Here are my best suggestions to use:
Tea tree Essential Oil – purifying, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory.
Geranium Essential Oil – hormone balancing, oily skin.
Grapefruit Essential Oil – great for oily skin and blackheads.
Cedarwood Essential Oil – calming and nurturing to the skin.
Chamomile Essential Oil – calming, repairing and great for sensitive skin.
Period Pain and PMS
ClaryCalm Roller Blend Essential Oil
ClaryCalm is a proprietary blend of essential oils specially designed for females and is one of my all-time favourite blends to use for hormonal imbalances, period troubles, PMS and PMT. It can be used on the abdomen when pain is about, used on the temples and back of neck for hormonal headaches, or simply used every day to help balance female hormones. This particular blend is already pre-made so simply roll it on. A topical blend of Clary Sage, Lavender, Bergamot, Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Fennel, Carrot Seed, Palmarosa, and Vitex, ClaryCalm provides a cooling effect to the skin and helps balance emotions.
Getting Up In The Morning!
Waking up for school is hard for many teens because of their biology. Teens need even more sleep than adults to perform at their best.
A teenagers’ natural sleep patterns can keep them up late, making waking up for school in the morning that much more difficult. Help your teen start the day feeling refreshed by adding these essential oils to their morning routine.
A great way to incorporate them is to put a few drops of your chosen essential oil into their shower gel, shampoo or even a few drops put in the base of the shower. When the steam hits the oil, it’s like being in a giant diffuser!
Lemon Essential Oil – energising, clean and refreshing.
Grapefruit Essential Oil – focus, clarity and awakening.
Spearmint Essential Oil – awakening, invigorating and fresh
Siberian Fir Essential Oil – fresh, soothes anxious feelings, relaxing and grounding
Eucalyptus Essential Oil – fresh, invigorating and opens up the lungs.
Sleep and Relaxation
Essential oils have been used for centuries to help induce sleep and relax the mind, body and soul. Encourage your teen to use these oils to help with relaxation before bedtime by diffusing or making up a roller bottle blend:
Lavender Peace Essential Oil – nurturing, grounding, calming.
Balance Essential Oil – grounding, helps with racing thought calms the mind and body.
Cedarwood Essential Oil – increases serotonin, relaxes the body. Place a drop on the underneath of each big toe before bed.
Vetiver Essential Oil – a grassy oil with potent powers to induce sleep. Place a drop on the underneath of each big toe before bed.
Stress and Mild Anxiety
Between the pressure of exams, hormonal changes, peer pressures and making the right career choices, it’s easy to see why teens can be stressed at times. The choices teens make today can have a serious lasting impact on their future, and often puts much stress on your teen.
All this tension can impact a teen’s long-term mental and physical health. Signs of severe stress in your teen are abrupt emotional changes, behaviour changes or physical changes.
If you’re worried your teen could be suffering serious mental health problems, always consult a medical professional in the first instance. For day to day stress, try using these essential oils around the house or in a relaxing bath:
Bergamot Essential Oil – one of the most popular oils to use in for dealing with stress, tension and mild anxiety.
Ylang Ylang Essential Oil – promotes feelings of joy and positivity and helps combat negative emotions.

Sports and Exercise
Whatever it is that your teen sets out to achieve, there are a few ways in which essential oils can lend a helping hand and make that sport session just that little bit easier.
When you increase your physical activity, it’s not uncommon for you to feel the strain on your muscles. Often we can feel aches and pains after an intense exercise session and need a little help to ease the discomfort.
Bonus tip: Before your teens workout, get them to use essential oils to energise and motivate!
After your workout – essential oils to help you recover:
Eucalyptus Essential Oil – invigorating and soothes sore muscles. Try a few drops in a warm bath or mix a few with a carrier oil and massage in to sore areas.
Ice Blue Essential Oil – this athletic blend is quite strong, so always mix with a carrier oil.
- Apply on feet and knees before and after exercise.
- Massage a few drops of Ice Blue Athletic Blend with a carrier oil onto growing kids’ legs before bedtime.
Confidence and Courage
Yes! There are even essential oils for courage and confidence! These Oils can be used in a diffuser, in a roller bottle blend or a few drops on pulse points whenever your teen needs a little extra help:
Fennel Essential Oil – helps strengthen your connections, willingness, and desire.
Cardamom Essential Oil – combats feeling of self-pity.
Bergamot Essential Oil – instils a feeling of brightness and positivity.
Sandalwood Essential Oil – fights feeling of dread and fear.
Wild Orange Essential Oil – fights fear of ridicule.
