I’ve tried a few different protein powders in my time and well, they don’t really float my boat. Yes you can bung a tasty flavour over the top of them, but I can still detect that hideous chalky, powdery texture and it proper puts me off. I get the point of them, but perhaps because I’m not some elite athlete (jeez, I’m not even sure the word athlete could be applied to me!) I haven’t felt the need to persevere with them.
But here’s the thing, when a company sends you a powder that is, get this, Glazed Donut flavour (ummm hello!) well it would be seriously rude and downright wrong not to give it a go!
SCI-MX Nutrition have gone all American on us with their spelling of donut, I guess to be down with the kids (arghhh am fairly certain no one under the age of 30 would ever use the term ‘down with the kids’!) and create appeal to the youth market. They claim that…
“Not all treats have to be a cheat!”
Suggesting that you don’t need to have cheat days when you can have tasty donut flavoured shakes in your life. Well let’s give this baby a whirl.
OMG so sweet, literally like someone’s grabbed a doughnut and liquidised it!!! I’m not gonna lie, it tastes unhealthy but apparently it contains no added sugar and is low in fat. There’s 34g or protein per 45g serving, 4.6g of Glutamine and a 2:1:1 BCAA ratio – I have no idea what that means, but it sounds good right? What I do know is that high protein shakes and foods help towards muscle growth and maintenance and from a dietary point of view helps keep you feeling fuller for longer, meaning less of an excuse to scoff ALL the biscuits post-workout!
And perhaps the best bit, for a foodie like me, is that you don’t just need to have it as a shake, nope, check out these delicious recipes I came up with:
SCI-MX Glazed Donut Protein Pancakes
These are perfect for a lazy Sunday morning breakfast or a post-workout brunch, and they’re not only super tasty on their own but you can proper pimp them up with whatever toppings you want to whack on top!
What’s In It?
- 1 heaped tbsp Glazed Donut Protein Powder
- 1/2 a Banana
- 2 Egg Whites
- 40g Oats
- 2 tsp Baking Powder
- Handful of Blueberries
- Coconut Oil to fry
How Do I Make It?
Pour all of the ingredients except the blueberries into a tall container and blitz with a hand blender until everything has mixed together and formed a frothy batter. Pour into a bowl and stir in the blueberries.
Heat a small amount of coconut oil in a frying pan and then place blobs of batter around the pan, making sure to keep enough space around them to allow for spread and for you to be able to turn them easily. If the pan is suitably hot, they will take hardly any time at all to cook, so make sure you keep an eye on them! You should start to notice small bubbles on the surface, when you see this it’s time to flip. Using a spatula gently turn the pancakes over and press down on the top. Again they won’t take long, so once both side are brown get them out that pan pronto!
They can of course be enjoyed on their own, but as if we’re going to pass up an opportunity to get the nut butter and agave syrup out 😉
